Maybe Ferrus was deep enough in his books to not notice Kais approach. Or he was just more silent than he though, keeping his hooves from making noises on the floor.
Either way, Kais saw him and decided to give him a greeting. Besides, he was sure Ferrus hadn't seen him outside of his armor yet so his greeting had to be unique, if rude. Though he didn't care if Ferrus was insulted or not.
Ironically, it actually took Kais a while to notice he was there. His distance vision had always been poor...poor for his entire race. They needed their armor or optics to help bring images right up to their face to they could 'see' better.
