Lately, the few who dare to venture out during the 13th hour have been returning with strange rumors. Of course, rumors are on par for the course in Hinoto-Ri, but these are a little different. Consistent. And almost... hopeful, in some cases.

Geta no oto...
They speak of a small child, seen only during the hours of demons. His purpose seems to be mysterious for some. He's seen in the background with a fleeting glance, in a tree. Sometimes he's partying with the demons. Sometimes he's fighting them. He's easily recognizable; his striped vest, his geta sandals. The way his hair swoops over one eye, as if obscuring some terrible secret underneath it.

In one story, a young child who had wandered out too late at night was nearly eaten by a ghoul until the boy in blue, yellow and black swooped in, defending the child ferociously. Nobody believed him at school later, of course.

But there were other stories too. A man who had taken too much pleasure in tormenting weak demons had been found one night, nearly frozen stiff. He'd be saved -- somehow -- but he could barely look at a Jack Frost doll without screaming. In the midst of it all, mention let slip of a child overlooking his torment. Twiddling his thumbs. Uncaring. Somehow, despite his getas and outfit, he did not look cold in the slightest.

The older residents who remembered the days before the great catastrophe whisper a name on their lips. Those who listened carefully to the insects could swear they hear them chittering a name in praise.
