Yamato did have friends... he was just very inexperienced in how to deal with them. Living your entire life isolated from society, and made to run a secret government organisation since childhood sort of ruined any chances of learning how friends worked.

A rotten world filled with rotten trash. Even more puzzling as to why the man would help such filth. Ahah, such harsh words, but, honestly, modern society had corroded into such a complacent and disgusting society. People were judged on their bloodlines, or how much wealth they amassed, or their gender or their race, shutting their doors to those who carry the proper potential! It was disgusting, forcing people into poverty or a life of mediocrity just because of something as ridiculous as being poor, or foreign, or some other petty reason here.
Modern society was beyond help.
But, of course, despite knowing better, Yamato still wished to better than society into something that would abolish such oppression. If everyone functioned on a merit-based society, everyone would be settled into their proper place, and able to reach higher and higher heights no matter who their family were, or how rich they were, or...
