01: Exploring!

Summary: Yamato exploring the surroundings of where he lives. Stop being a hermit, Yamoeto.

It had taken some internal coaxing, but Yamato finally decided to explore the surrounding area. He could hardly reside in a place where he was ignorant of the local geography after all. What are the main buildings, what is the population of people, what is the strategic and defensive capabilities of such an area, etc, etc...

Normally his subordinates carried out such checks, but Yamato knew how to do it himself. It was strange to do it without a gaggle of peons at his heels, though, clucking and chattering about this and that. He actually felt a bit...naked without them. He never realised how vulnerable he felt without them.

Not to say that he couldn't defend himself. He could. It still just felt odd not to have his usual resources at his command. To begin from scratch... although not that Yamato was planning on starting from scratch. What was the point...? This wasn't Japan, and he had no stakes in defending this strange place from threats - not unless it was to preserve his own renewed life.

Without a purpose...it was both terrifying and liberating. He could choose his own purpose now, although Yamato hadn't the slightest clue on where to begin.

So he wandered Libra's streets, hoping he would stumble across something at the very least.

"..."

The...man did know that one couldn't catch fish in the open air, didn't he? Especially not with a plastic child's toy? Whatever, the insanity of the civilians weren't Yamato's responsibility.

"I was walking, which you just so rudely interrupted," Yamato said, although his tone wasn't annoyed. He slipped his hands into his pockets, debated whether to just wander off, but then reminded himself that he actually didn't have anything else to do.

Hrn...

"I suppose that boating reference is translated to, 'I look rather lost', correct?"

Urataros gave him a golf clap. "Pick the most applicable descriptor. Lost, aimless, floundering, out for a stroll with no particular place to go."

He reeled in the little lures.

"I prefer the stroll one," Yamato deadpanned. "You do realise that you can't catch anything with a toy fishing rod, don't you? Especially out of water."

"Yes," said Urataros, slowly and patiently. "When I referred to myself as 'just waiting for a bite', I meant that I was waiting for someone to come along and react to the fishing rod."

"Similarly, when I mentioned being able to tell a lot about a fish from the kind of bait it reacts to, I was referring to being able to derive useful information about a person from the way they react to a situation. Particularly one designed to attract their attention. At no point was I talking about an actual fish."

This was worse than explaining things to Momotaros who, though somewhat single-minded, could at least pick up on simple figurative language.

Hm...that was a somewhat peculiar way to gain information on passerbys, but Yamato supposed that it was clever.

"I see. And what useful information did you get from my reaction?" Yamato asked, looking slightly amused at this point.

"Well, let's put it this way," said Urataros, resting the rod against one shoulder.

"You're not the sharpest swordfish in the sea."

Yamato laughed.

"Ahaha...! That is the first time someone told me that! Hrm, I suppose I am a bit absent-minded today..." Yamato hummed, not at all insulted. He had been slow on the uptake, so he sort of deserved that minor jab.

"Your friends are very charitable. But I think it's about time to cut bait."

He gave Yamato a brief, flippant wave, then disappeared into the crowd.

Yamato blinked, staring where the man vanished to, before laughing again. That had been...a peculiar encounter! Hrm, strange person. Strange indeed...
