01: Exploring!

Summary: Yamato exploring the surroundings of where he lives. Stop being a hermit, Yamoeto.

It had taken some internal coaxing, but Yamato finally decided to explore the surrounding area. He could hardly reside in a place where he was ignorant of the local geography after all. What are the main buildings, what is the population of people, what is the strategic and defensive capabilities of such an area, etc, etc...

Normally his subordinates carried out such checks, but Yamato knew how to do it himself. It was strange to do it without a gaggle of peons at his heels, though, clucking and chattering about this and that. He actually felt a bit...naked without them. He never realised how vulnerable he felt without them.

Not to say that he couldn't defend himself. He could. It still just felt odd not to have his usual resources at his command. To begin from scratch... although not that Yamato was planning on starting from scratch. What was the point...? This wasn't Japan, and he had no stakes in defending this strange place from threats - not unless it was to preserve his own renewed life.

Without a purpose...it was both terrifying and liberating. He could choose his own purpose now, although Yamato hadn't the slightest clue on where to begin.

So he wandered Libra's streets, hoping he would stumble across something at the very least.

Yamato paused at the familiar shout, and turned to see Shijima running up towards him. Hm, strange, normally he was a bit nervous in approaching him...but Yamato didn't question it. Shijima was a bit familiar, and some familiarity was comforting in these alien surroundings.

"Shijima. I'm well. You?"

Look at that, he was doing small talk, even if it was in monosyllabic replies.

[hetried]

"I'm good! More or less, I guess. I mean it's not so bad here. Getting pulled off on missions, it's just like we're back at JP's!"

Ahahaha... yeah he still hasn't totally chilled out after that mission, but he's, he's getting there. Definitely not that bad! He offered a chuckle, but then he still looked concerned.

"You sure everything's OK? After the uh... you know." Would it be bad form to actually bring it up--

Hm, Shijima appeared a little jumpy. Yamato wondered what his mission was about - but then brushed the brief burst of curiosity aside. Shijima got wound up over the minor of things, so it had probably been nothing exciting.

At the question though, oh, the wall comes slamming down. Yamato's expression blanked and he crossed his arms defensively over his chest. "Fine."

Sorry Yamato he is never talking about that mission OK--

Daichi's typical completely-anxious-around-Yamato-disposition was rearing its head once more, as it was obvious that Yamato... wasn't, happy talking about that at all. Understandably so! But, still, yeesh.

"Uh-- I'm glad! I mean, I was kind of worried, and the you and Kaito just took off like that..."

We are dangerously approaching 'ramble mindless from nervousness' mode abort abort abort--

"We just had a private talk."

Yamato's tone was very cool, but he uncrossed his arms after a moment and changed the topic abruptly. "Are you residing in this area as well?"

[hetried]

Oh. Well then, this conversation suddenly became a lot better than it could've been!

His disposition's automatically bright now, and his grin's a bit less nervous. Though it's still Yamato, so he's about as not-nervous as he's gonna get talking to this guy. "Yeah! I live up in 5-05. Do you live around here too?"

[drakenguard]

"Libra 7-02," Yamato replied. "So I am quite close by. Hm, interesting..." he tilted his head slightly. "Do you know where Kaito resides?"

[hetried]

"Not exactly. He lives in another district though-- Pisces, I think?"

Yep he's gonna get so lost one of these days. "It's not that far away, but it's still kind of lame."

[drakenguard]

"Hm," Yamato seemed to agree if his slightly put out expression was any indication. "I see..."

A pause.

"So where are you going?"

[hetried]

"Nowhere, really. The apartments are really small, so I figure I could at least get out and see if I can find anyone else I recognize."

Amazingly, he's still smiling, in spite of himself. "Why do you ask?"

"Curiosity," Yamato said absently. "I'm exploring, as I am uncomfortable without a mental map of the surrounding area."

He's trying hard to do this conversation thing...! Can't you see he's trying?

[hetried]

He is very proud!! It's just weird that you're. Y'know, talking to him.

"That's true! You basically knew most of Japan like the back of your own hand, didn't you?" He's still to this day impressed by the JP's facilities.

"It'll be good to know if any other place goes under attack like this time. Maybe there's even a map of the place you can pick up to help. It's not like it's the first time they've gotten new people like us."

[drakenguard]

Yamato nodded, looking pleased that Daichi understood. Hrm, he knew Shijima wasn't as thick as he appeared. He was quite pleasantly surprised!

"Yes, a map would be helpful," Yamato tilted his head slightly, looking thoughtful, "Where would you purchase such a thing in civilian shops?"

He...knows jack all about shops. Erm, well, no, he knows what supermarkets are, but, those are mainly for foods and house appliances, aren't they...?

[hetried]

"Hahah, you don't need to buy it-- not if you only need a map of the city at least. You can buy more complicated ones of the are, but I don't think you need those."

Or. Well maybe he would need one later. This whole city was closed in, did they even have maps of the country anymore?

"Usually you can find smaller maps for tourists for free at special government places for tourists-- don't know where one of those would be though... Or you could buy the more complicated ones at a bookstore. They usually have something."

[drakenguard]

Yamato logged away this information with rapt attention, nodding slightly. "I see. Perhaps we should go with the smaller maps first."

It would be easier to memorise, and would focus more on buildings and things like that. Larger maps would focus more on roads and landmarks.

[hetried]

"This place is apparently prepared for new people like us dropping in, so I'm sure we can find a map somewhere!"

Not that he...had... any idea where that would be. Whoops. At lest he's looking around a bit while he continues rambling inanely. "You'd think they'd just give us a map on our phone-things or something though..."

[drakenguard]

"Those devices? Truthfully I haven't checked to see if they come with a map function," Yamato admitted. "Have you?"

[hetried]

"Uh, not really."

Kind of ashamed to admit, but then, kind of not really because he knows himself. Everyone already knew he wasn't the smartest at this, geez!!

[drakenguard]

"..." Yamato gave Daichi a long stare, obviously disappointed in Daichi's presumption. "Check to see if it has a map function, Shijima."

[hetried]

"R-Right!!"

He deeefinitely didn't waste any time hitting some buttons on his watch so that the glasses came up over his eyes. A bit of navigating (which didn't take too long because hey, computers were a thing he was mildly competent at), and sure enough...

"Oh, they do have a map! Cool...!"

Brb being fascinated by future tech.

Yamato almost sighed in exasperation. Well at least they wouldn't have to go through the trouble of hunting down a map from one of the civilian stores if there was one on those strange devices.

After a brief pause of being ignored of all things by Daichi happily fiddling with his new toy, Yamato reached over and grabbed the back of Daichi's shirt and scarf, yanking him up hard enough for his feet to leave the ground briefly.

"Are you quite done?"

[hetried]

"A-ACK--!"

Daichi was completely snapped out of his investigative mode when suddenly Yamato was grabbing him and he was off the ground and also he was being choked for a second or so? That scarf was really going to be the death of him.

"R-Right! Sorry!" Said with just a slightly panicking voice and clapping his hands together apologetically. "B-But hey, at least we have a map now...!!"

Please let him go and don't kill him

Yamato gave him a stern stare for a long moment before releasing his scarf. "Indeed. Have you discovered any other useful functions of it?" When you were ignoring him, hmph!

[hetried]

He made a small gulping noise, before looking back at the COMP again, without ignoring Yamato this time.

"Yeah, you can do all sorts of stuff with it...! It's got games, you can get news, message other people... It's kind of like a portable computer!"

[drakenguard]

"Hm, how useful," Yamato glanced at his own COMP. It was very small as well - amazing that they could cram so many functions into it like that.
