Summary: Ruri is going to get a birthday cake for herself, mostly because she's afraid if she doesn't the people at home would be mad at her.
Warnings: None of note?

Ruri was out, out of her ship, out on the town, out of uniform in a simple dress. She was looking from bakery to bakery and after the 5th or so one she purchased a cake and some candles and moved away from all the hubbub of any festivals to sit down and light them.

"....This seems like such a waste, but I think Minato would be mad if I didn't. Not that it really matters here I guess."

Oh well look who it is!

"Ooo, cake! What's the occasion?"

"Its my birthday."

She shrugs a bit like she stated it was Thursday or the sky was blue.

"Do you want some cake?"

[unbroken_chain]

...wait what.

"Why didn't you say anything?! Now I don't have anything to give you!"

Well ain't this a fine kettle of Basculin.

"It never seemed that important to me? Back home they made a big deal out of it too, I never quite got it."

[unbroken_chain]

THIS WILL NOT STAND.

"That's because birthdays are a celebration! Except what's being celebrated is you! If everyone makes a big deal about it, it's because they think you're a big deal!"

And now Kotoha is furiously wracking her brains for an idea.

"Okay, since I was completely unprepared for this and don't have a present, there's only one solution! We need to have a second date at the festival!"

A slightly confused look edges on her face.

"Festival? That thing with the drums? That's why I came into town, it was too loud to think in the park."

Slight pause.

"...yeah, I dunno what's up with those drums either."

MOVING ON

"But it's fine! We can find one of those target booths and I'll win you a prize!"

"Are you sure that's necessary? Maybe you'd just like some cake?"

[unbroken_chain]

Kotoha grins and snaps her fingers in mock disappointment.

"Ah, the bitter sting of rejection!"

Hamming it up for all she's worth, she places one hand over her heart and staggers about dramatically.

"The only thing that can heal my wounded heart is cake!"

With that, she sits down next to Ruri, laughing.

"Okay! Remember to make a wish when you blow out the candles!"

"Eh?"

She blinks and peers at the other girl's dramatics.

"I just don't have proper attire for a festival like that. Oh yes, candles. I should do that too."

"Well, you're one up on me, then! I don't even know what the proper attire is!"

Kotoha shrugs a little.

"I was planning on going like this, since I saw a bunch of people headed there wearing normal clothes."

"Oh, I was told Kimonos were what you wore to those by Yurika. Perhaps its something from home? I really don't know. I don't do a lot of festival things."

Kotoha nods at that.

"Okay, let's switch the conversation back to you! Shall we light the candles?"

She's not exactly subtle, is she?

She shrugs a bit and puts them on.

"I don't have any fire. Do you?"

[unbroken_chain]

"...hm."

Please hold while she thinks this over.

"...I don't think I have anything small enough."

"What doesn't matter?"

Says Yukko, the girl who just happens to have strolled away from the festival as well. Yukko feels instinctually drawn to light and sweets, but now that she's here she completely forgets about the two of them.

Yukko frowns.

"Why are you eating a cake all alone?"

"Because everyone else was busy with the festival, and it would be rude to ruin that fun just because its my birthday."

It takes Yukko a minute to register what Ruri is means, since Yukko still has the festival on her brain! When she mentions 'birthday', Yukko assumes that all of her friend's were too busy to come!

But then everything clicks and Yukko jerks back.

"You didn't ask anyone? To your birthday?!"

"It didn't seem that important."

She shrugs a bit.

"Would you like some cake?"

Yukko feels ready to say yes, but she stops herself.

"... Well! Then you'll just have to celebrate with me!"

Yukko unceremoniously plops down on the ground and chuckles, arms crossed.

"Pretty cool place to have a party though! With Tanabata happening, it's way too crowded and noise!"

"My birthday has never been that big of a deal where I come from but all right. And yes, its considerably less noisy here."

She nods in agreement with the last part.

"Ruri?" Mikale had finished putting in a job application. He was actually putting in multiple applications by this point, in desperate search for a job. Normally he would follow this up by going back to his apartment and being an anti-social butterfly, but today was different. Today he saw someone he recognized. "Ruri! Hey?"

She waves a little. She hadn't seen Mikale in a while but recognized him and moved a little making some space.

"Hello, how are you doing today?"

[shadowsher]

"Good. What's up with you, Ruri?" He managed to sound casual, but this chance encounter was a very big deal for Mikale. Initiating a conversation like this was normally too hard for him.

She shrugs a bit.

"I was just cutting a piece of this cake out. Would you like some?"
