A year might seem so little at first, but for a city like Hinoto-Ri, progress had been steady. And how would it have been without you? Hard to say. Regardless, there were some appreciative people of your hard work, and thus you were warned ahead of time of a little celebration that would be held in your honor, this Friday (FRIDAY! FRIDAY!)

Nothing too outrageous, you had been promised. After all, budgets had to be made and citizens had to be saved. Something more akin to a fun party with friends and the city. An open note sent out to all citizens if they so wanted to join in.

There was quite a turnout! The lure of fun and food drew people from all the wards and words of encouragement and thanks were given to you freely. Maybe because some of them had drank too much sake.

The booths are bustling with activity. There's food for everyone as merchants try to outdo each other with both traditional food and more exotic ones; Corn on the cob, Pumpkins, Yaki Imo (Oven-Roasted Sweet Potatoes), Ramen stands, Falafel, caramelized apples, octopus sausages on sticks...

There are also signup sheets for competitions tonight. While townspeople can join, the big draw is to see the Visitors attempt the typical school festivals, such as the swimsuit competition and the dress competition (for both male and women!).

...yeah maybe they just have a good sense of humor. Which is good! A happy city means, at least, for a little while, people can forget what's happening and maybe the place is going to flourish more with hope.

So hopefully you can show them that by enjoying yourselves!

[Someone nearby is attempting to determine the same thing, it seems, as he swings with the cylinder.]

[...The end promptly goes flying off and into a takoyaki stand across the street; Atsuro blinks for a moment or two before rapidly turning around and walking in the other direction.]

...maybe I should go back to instructing people on how to use swords. Or make them.

...You've been gone a while, haven't you? ...A really long while? Or have you just had nothing to say on the network?

[She drops the subject. Using a lightsaber is just as much science as art, after all.]

Based on what they told me when I came back, I was gone for two or three months. The last thing I remember was strange memories of living in a city like this one, and before that was bull monsters.

The memory swap? That was... May. Yeah, I think around May. So it's been around four months now.

Welcome back to the city, I guess. Did you enjoy the break?

Longer than I thought, and I think I was only "home" for a couple of hours.

[She shrugs]

I was certainly slightly less confused than I was here, but I was working on a big problem or two back home, too. At least I know for sure time wasn't passing there while it was here.

[otakuro]

...Huh. Really?

[A slight pause.]

I've heard of it the other way around - a few months have passed at home when barely a few days have passed here, but this is the first time it's been like this. You probably don't need much of a reintroduction, then! ...Philemon must really want you.

Really.

[She thinks about that.]

I guess I should be flattered, but sometimes I feel a little too unique, you know?

[otakuro]

...Always saving the world, huh?

[Atsuro gives a small smile.]

Yeah. It would be nice to just go back to school and... live the way a normal person should live.

[echo_of_a_jedi]

Heh. I tried that too, but it sounds like you know how that always goes.

[otakuro]

Hah, well...! If things go well, that's what I'll have to look forward to once I get back. I'm just saying. It's been a while since I've been a normal high school student.

...Not so much for you, huh?

I wouldn't even know what a high school is unless I'd come here.

But, you know, things get to be too much, you try to wander the galaxy and forget about the big problems, but sometimes the big problems have a way of finding you.

I just finished one of those big problems up, and I'm not planning on waiting around for the next one.

It doesn't technically count as waiting if no time passes, right? ...That's what I figure while I'm here.

[Atsuro: why do today what you can put off for a century]

Oh - I wanted to ask. Did you remember this place while you were at home at all?

[echo_of_a_jedi]

[She shakes her head.]

I didn't think about it at all, and I can't imagine why I wouldn't have unless I simply didn't remember.

To be honest, I've forgotten stranger things, but nothing quite so long and detailed as my stay here...

[Atsuro breathes a light sigh.]

I guess that's what I expected would happen. After all, we couldn't go home with years of memories - years of age, too. If we stay here long enough, we'd probably revert back to how old we were when we first got here, too.

That's how things usually go in stories like these, right...?

To be honest, I don't think I've ever heard a story like this.

[otakuro]

...I guess they wouldn't write sci-fi or fantasy stories in a sci-fi world.

It's a little depressing to think about, though.

The important thing is helping this world while we're here, right? It's not that different than any other life, we just skip straight to the having-adult-responsibilities part.

[otakuro]

...Yeah.

[Logically, that made sense. But he had always hated that cliche, hated how it meant that nothing was learned and nothing was gained, that it meant pressing the reset button. It was the lazy way out and unsatisfying in any number of ways...]

I mean, it's not like the responsibilities here are even all that much, anyway.

It's mostly waiting around for a crisis, at least for those of us who are already used to playing freelance monster hunter.

[She considers him for a bit.]

That's not the part that bothers you, though.

[He gives a shrug.]

If there are rules about going home, there are rules. I can't imagine they'd let us wander around talking about Hinoto-Ri and how much fun we had in another dimension.

It might be a bit confusing. I'm not sure anyone would believe me, and I've frankly seen weirder stuff.

Still though, connecting to others, learning about ourselves...it would be a useful learning experience if we could remember it, right?

[She might be cheating a little at this point, but she can convince herself that she's getting his disappointment from his body language and not the edges of his mind if he can.]

[Atsuro is oblivious, regardless. He can't imagine anyone else would be alright with losing all memory of this place upon returning home...]

As long as we're going for cop-outs, maybe it will be like those times when the 'knowledge lives on in your heart' or whatever. You know. Like you're wiser but you don't know how.

Or maybe the important part is the impact you have on this world. It's hardly a "cop-out" if we save people here, is it?

...What, so we're just free labor now? Great for them, I guess.

[Atsuro is somewhat grumpier than usual, it seems.]
