Summary: why would you ever give this shit a persona and let her run free during the 13th hour

Warnings: Saionji's potential to swear and insult people (Saionji should be a warning in herself, tbh.)

[So. What did you expect to see today on the 13th Hour? Some muck left over from the Aries Boss Battle? Just another day hunting demons? Well... you might mistake her for a screaming demon at first, but when you come close enough, you can notice that the yelling is coming from a new Visitor.

Saionji's rushing down the road with a speed she shouldn't possess, howling incoherently and being chased by this thing. With her being half its size, she obviously doesn't stand too much of a chance.

You might also see her slip up and run right into dead end. Ah, fuck.]

...WAAAAAAH! Is this what Yomi is like?! SOMEONE HELP ME!

[Really a screeching harpy. As it backs her into a corner, though- it's about to swing its club down on her, before a big burst of light throws it off course for a moment. How convenient.]

I art thou... thou art I... dancer of Izumo and bringer of arts, I am Izumo-no-Okuni.

Attack it! Get that thing away from me!

"HOLD IT!"

Oh hey it is some kind of demonic little girl flying in from out of nowhere and leveling an accusatory claw at the Oni.

"Queen Desco demands to see your pillaging license, mister!"

[ What was a young girl doing out in the Thirteenth Hour?

Takakage didn't often go out during said hour. But this time, he did - the screams of said girl would have been enough to rouse distress alarms all around the area. Most unfortunately, the only one in the area was him.

Koppa Tengu burst into existence by his side, soaring forward and swooping down between the girl and the demon harassing her. The three-legged avian screeched and flapped its wings once, shooting myriads of feathers straight into the demon's belly. The Oni howled and swung its club forward - but stopped mid-strike as a torrent of water slammed forcefully into its back.

The demon disintegrated into a pile of glitter, revealing the strategist standing a distance behind. He closed the tome that he was holding, quickly approaching to make sure she wasn't hurt. ]

Are you alright?

[ He took effort to sound as gentle as possible. The girl seemed to have a Persona out - newly awakened, perhaps? - but it didn't seem to be capable of combat. ]

Okay, what the fuck is going on.

"Another monster?! Help meeee! Beat them up, beat them up, whatever you are!" What a great thing to command your fucking SUPPORT Persona to do. Okuni kind of just stands there shielding.

Why this... the Oni seems to be interested in the new girl, though.

[It's too bad her Persona looks like the modern artwork perception of Okuni, or Takakage might've just recognized her.]

...Uuu... [Stop. The man has a monster too, didn't he? Who's to say he isn't just tricking her too? She's heard tales of trickery and hags in the world of the dead. Even now, she needed to be vigilant. But what the hell can she do in a corner?

This is certainly a predicament.]

Don't come any closer, or- or when my Granny gets here, I'll make her stone you alive! [Jesus, Saionji, way to thank your savior.] Who are you?! How did you... use that thing?

[If she's to believe Philemon, who probably guided her to the afterlife or some shit, the 'Okuni' character is her... Persona? Nice reference back to kabuki theater, but not exactly enough to convince her it's not dangerous, too.] Just because I'm dead doesn't mean you can treat me like a pushover, just so you know!

Desco just glances back at Saionji.

"Please be quiet, shouty yellow subject. Queen Desco is busy doing her duties as ruler of Earth!"

Back to the Oni.

"Now, please present your pillaging license! There are rules about attacking Desco's subjects, you know!"

Okay seriously what the fuck.

"Pillaging license?! Even when I'm dead, my title still stands, you know! Don't even touch me!"

SHE WILL NOT BE QUIET, LITTLE DEMON KID.

Desco sighs a little.

"Desco would apologize for what she is about to do, but...that's a lie; Desco never apologizes. YOG-SOTHOTH!"

The Oni is vaporized so completely by the attack not even ashes remain as Desco rotates in mid-air to face Saionji.

"Desco doesn't care what your title is! Desco's title is Final Boss Girl, so she automatically outranks you!"

"I'm-"

...Okay. No. Nevermind. Have her back up against the wall even more in fright, Desco. That was... certainly a display of power.

"...Stay away from me! Don't come any closer, you demon!" Staring around, she tries to look for an opening and bolts for it. Sorry, Desco.

[ Ah.

The girl is reasonably distressed, but he already notes her sharp tongue. A dozen theories come to mind, but he dismisses those thoughts and focuses on the immediate situation at hand.

Koppa Tengu flies over to him, folding its wings and looking attentive. After all, it was much more familiar-looking than the average Persona. Still maintaining his gentle tone, he speaks as calmly as possible. Hopefully it will reassure her. ]

Don't be afraid. A demon attacked you, but it's gone now. [ He indicated the pile of glitter in the floor.

His Persona hooted softly in affirmation. ] This is my Persona. It's named Koppa Tengu. That lady over there should be your Persona - if you're new here, a man called Philemon would have mentioned them to you. They're part of your soul, sort of - and they'll fight demons in your place if you can't.

You'll need to get to somewhere safe as soon as possible. There are many other monsters around at this time of the night.

Saionji tends to keep herself in a rather high-and-mighty state of mind, but in situations like these? When her actual life is at stake? She's not blind. She knows she's almost defenseless. The only thing she can do is seem threatening, when at best, she can only seem cute. Demons probably don't care about SHSL titles. She can't fall back on that in a place like this.

Not in the world of the dead.]

...Fine. Take me to safety. [That's something of a command, and it comes after quite a while of silent staring. Okuni actually sticks around- if Saionji understood the mechanics of Personas, she would understand she was showing off the fact that she was still tense as hell.] Are Personas a normal practice in Yomi?

[...Still thinks it's Yomi, too. Hey, the demons fit the bill.]

[ Takakage could almost sense the threads of thought running through the girl's head - there was definitely something she was hiding. He ought to be careful. She didn't seem to possess outright malevolence, though. Which was... a little reassuring. ]

This isn't Yomi. [ He was familiar with the concept as well - it raised the possibility that they were from the same lands. ] You're in a city, named Hinoto-Ri. [ A pause. He wasn't sure how to put it across. ] While there are demons, they only come out at late night. In the daytime, people still go about their lives.

As for Personae... not everyone in the city has them, only those chosen from other worlds by Philemon. People like you and me. If you're here, the city government ought to have assigned you an apartment to live in. All the residential buildings are demon-proofed by barriers, so you'll be safe there.

[ Another pause. ]

I can check where your house is, but you'll have to give me your name. I hope you're fine with that.

[Not- wait, hold on, pause right there.

So if it isn't Yomi... does that mean she isn't dead? Or was her soul supposed to go to Yomi, but somehow brought here instead? Or... she touches her neck a bit conspicuously. No wound there.

...Well! If she's supposed to be alive, she has to be even more careful. There's nothing she can do now but be wary, so she better be good at it.]

You better not be lying. [That's what she croaks out after a while. If he turns out to really be lying, she's all ready to make a run for it any time.] I'm Saionji Hiyoko, remember that. But since I've told you my name, you should play fair and tell me yours, too.

[Or else she'll... uh... she's punch you >8C]

[ It was certainly a Japanese name, but one he had never heard of before. Ah well. ]

A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Miss Saionji. [ He responded with a nod of acknowledgement. ] My name is Kobayakawa Takakage, retainer of the Mouri clan.

[ The COMP popped out of thin air to land neatly over his eyes. A quick scan revealed the numbers he had been looking for. ] Your apartment is in the Libra Ward, ninth floor, first door. [ He retracted the lenses after the search was complete. Knowing Saionji, she would ask about it. ] Are you by chance familiar with the concept of computers? Each Visitor received one. It resembles eyewear. You should be able to summon it by thought.

...Kobayakawa?

[Give her a moment. She's heard that name before. Actually, no, read it before. It rolls off a tongue in a very pretty manner, as old-timey Japanese names go- which it is, isn't it? Kobayakawa Takakage is a very old-timey name...

The mention of the Mouri clan seals it.] Hah, don't even think of tricking me, moron! One of your claims doesn't make sense. If this isn't Yomi, you shouldn't be here, because you've been dead for hundreds of years. But if this really isn't Yomi, you can't be someone who's been gone for ages, serving as retainer to a clan that barely has a fraction of its power now compared to before.

[#logic. She does summon out the COMP, though- whoa holy shit what. She starts fooling around with it a bit while walking, writing nonsense in the air.] So, are you lying about who you are or where we are?

I do not lie. People arrive in Hinoto-Ri from many worlds and many times. You presumably come from the far future of the Land of the Rising Sun.

[ A pause. He closed his eyes briefly. ]

[Okay, this place has demons which she's having a hard time believing already. Time travel...?

[ Saionji was speaking Japanese, either way. He could understand her, though there were differences in the syntax that made it a little difficult.

But now for the questions. The first was quite easy. He turned around briefly, indicating the clan crest sewn into his overcoat. The garment also bore two smaller crests upon the side of each shoulder. ]

This is my clan's crest. The Kobayakawa command a navy - part of the Mouri's famed sea force, of course. [ Entirely reasonable for a clan head to bear the mark of his family.

The second question, however, was puzzling. The strategist was only eighteen - while he could see himself perhaps adopting children later on in life, it was far too early for him to even be thinking about this -

- two names suddenly surfaced within his mind, and he voiced them without thinking. ]

Hideaki and Fusamoto, if memory serves.

In response, Desco summons her Velvet Persona - The Smooze - and starts flying after Saionji, using the Pass Through skill to simply phase through little things like walls.

"Hey! Queen Desco didn't give you permission to run!"

[WELL SHE ONLY KNOWS HIDEAKI, SO GOOD ENOUGH!]

Is that so... well, your disguise is certainly well-researched if it isn't true. [She's only going to give him that much credit. If Takakage didn't mean well... honestly speaking, he should've finished her off right there and then. Cornered her in that alley. She wouldn't have been able to fight.

Saionji is inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, but she knows tricksters come in all forms. He might either be an idiot conman, a genuine fool, or a genius.]

But you said you're alive now, right? Which means everyone else here is alive, right?

NOPE, SHE'S OUT, BYE BITCHES.

"It passes through walls?!" Have her run even faster. NOT LISTENING, DESCO, RUSHING AS QUICKLY AS HER TWO FEET CAN CARRY HER...!

[ Saionji seemed to be reasonably convinced. Which was a good thing. ]

Well, as far as I know, all the Visitors are alive. Don't worry, this place isn't Yomi. [ He read many texts dedicated to describing it - though their motive was to use information as a whip to caution the living to behave. ]

You cannot fight demons on your own, can you? If this is the case, your Persona usually does the job. [ Especially if it was a combat Persona. ]

DESCO CURSES HER LOW MOVEMENT SPEED. DAMN YOU, GAME BALANCE!

Okay so she'll just pass through a couple more walls, come out in front of Saionji, and switch over to her primary Persona, Yog Sothoth, and drop a TP Run on Saionji to teleport her directly to Desco's room.

THIS PLAN CANNOT FAIL

...Oh.

Wow.

The sudden shift in surroundings really throws her off her feet, and- the first thing she notices is enclosed spaces. This is a trap. This has to be a trap.

And then, in a rare moment of bad motor control, she slips and lands face-flat on the floor.

"...Uuu... WAAAAAAH!" Congratulations, Desco. "PLEASE DON'T HURT ME! WAAAAAAAAAH!"

Like I said, you better not be lying... [But yes. Her. Persona. That thing. She glanced over, at the living artwork of Izumo-no-Okuni...]

So, what that thing your 'Persona'? How do I get them to fight? 'Oi, you! Beat the crap out of that thing'! My Persona didn't do anything in the previous fight, too... if it's defective, can I get another?

[...Saionji, you do realize the definition of the word 'Persona' means you're basically calling yourself defective right...]

[ Takakage looked thoughtful for a moment. ]

From what I know, since a Persona is derived from an individual's soul, they function as an extension of one's will. Some people give their Persona verbal orders, but usually they can just be controlled with your mind. Perhaps you haven't tried that out yet?

[ A pause. Koppa Tengu walked over to beside Saionji's Persona, inspecting it intently. ]

Hm. Persona are divided into two classes, combat-based and support-based. Your Persona could be the latter. Could you try syncing with it and trying a few skils out? Each Persona should have at least five active.
