[Open] A Place We Call Home

Who: Ruri/Open
Where: Can be seen from most of the city, but landing in the Capricorn Ward
Summary: The Battleships Nadesico swoops over the city and lands in the park
Warnings: Uh... Space... Battleships?

[Ruri looked over her controls, the Nadesico was operating as it should, however keeping it running completely on her own was taking its toll on the girl and she decided it was time to put the ship down. Radioing the city to warn of the event before she started to bring it down avoid as much panic as possible she let out a breath.]

"This is Ruri. I'm landing the ship in the park."

[The ship came out of the cloud bank it was hiding in and circled the city slowly twice, scanning the ground for a place that was large enough to accommodate it and wouldn't cause the citizens any worry due to a big battleship sitting there. After the second pass the ship slowly came to settle over the Capricorn Ward, in an unused field that was a ways away from the trains but not unwalkable.

The ground shaking slightly as it landed and steam belched from its exhaust ports, the ramp to the catapults opened, and then a ramp down lowered. Shortly after the small blue haired girl started down the ramp, dwarfed next to the size of the ship.]

[Ruri nods and follows, peering at the robot as the automated systems move the elevators in place and bring one up to cockpit level]

I don't really have a crew so the ship's computer and I have been handling everything up to now. That's why putting down was so tricky.

"I see."

Well, at least there's a gantry in here. Latooni shuts down the Raubtier's systems and carefully steps over to the elevator.

"Your ship's computer is very impressive if you can handle a capital ship on your own at all."

Omoikane is still the most advanced computer back home, despite being online for almost 6 years now. Other AI's have too many personality defects. The science in creating them is rather difficult.

Still I can handle most of her with extreme effort, she really needs a crew to be fully functional.

Latooni bats zero eyelashes at any of this on her way down to the deck, though she is curious what talking to a true AI that wasn't an android would be like.

"I'm sure it must be difficult. I don't think there's going to be a major naval engagement happening here, though..."

She hopes, anyway.

True, and the practical application of a cannon that can lay waste to a target the size of a small island is probably minimal. I figure the Nadesico will server primarily for data gathering and analysis purposes.

"Data gathering and analysis is actually my specialty," Latooni says as she reaches the ground, trying to remember if she's supposed to salute officers from a different organization entirely. Asem was an alternate-EFA officer, so that had been one thing, but she wasn't even sure who the Lieutenant Commander here even worked for. She settles for ignoring that to follow a more interesting topic of conversation.

"If you need any help with information warfare at all, I'm...working on determining how to gather that on any of the hostile presences we're supposed to be fighting here."

[Ruri nods a bit as dozens of holographic monitors appear in front of her, each with another data point about broadcasts, ship cameras, traffic projections time tables, basically all the data she's been collecting.]

If you want to take a look at any of these you are welcome, I haven't had enough time to compile much data, and haven't been able to really do much on the 13th hour to collect info about that either.

"Oh, that looks very helpful, thank you..." she says, eyes glancing over the monitors with an intent look. It would be information overload to most people, but Latooni professionally absorbs the information, worrying about context and processing later.

While she's looking, she decides to broach another subject. "So...what organization does the Nadesico belong to? Obviously we're on the same side here, but it would be nice to know..."

The Nadesico is maintained by the EDF, which is run out of Geneva to help patrol the space lanes between Earth and the Jovian colonies.

"That sounds like the Earth Federation Army. Right down to being headquartered in Geneva, in fact...the farthest colonies we have are at the Earth-Moon L2 point, though."

There is a moon colony too. Nergal Heavy Industries has a factory and plant there. Its where the Nadesico was built actually. The Mars colony is small and being rebuilt, since it was destroyed in the Earth/Jovian war.

"We haven't met any Jovians, but I guess your world is pretty close to mine in some ways," she replies, offering a short salute.

"Lieutenant Latooni Suvota of the Earth Federation Army," she says, introducing herself formally. "As long as we're both on the side of helping out here, I think we should be allies."

[Ruri nods]

That would make sense, and having another set of eyes to look over the data would be useful. Omoikane acts rather immature if I spend all my time working. You don't have control nanomachines by chance, do you?

No...we don't use nanotechnology for that kind of thing in my world.

Its experimental in my world too, but it never hurts to ask. Its probably for the best you don't.

Are there a lot of problems with it?

If your body doesn't reject them not really. Once someone tried to hack the crew's network and it did odd things to people's personalities, but its more the fact that not every person can be injected with them and not get very sick or die.

An autoimmune rejection would make sense...

There have actually been some experiments in that direction in my world, but they've mostly centered around enhancing pilots rather than serving as a control system. They've...pretty much universally turned out poorly.

Pilot nanomachines they have down to around an 80% success rate. Its the ones for syncing with data systems and AIs that are at able to used by 5% of the population and generally have to be introduced in early childhood. Something about brainwave patterns but I'm not a biologist so I'm not 100% certain.

Is that how you're able to interface with the ship's AI?

Yes. We were designed for each other basically.

I see.

[Designed...]

You were raised to captain this ship?

No. I was raised to be the interface circuit for Omoikane. I became captain of this ship because I was the most qualified and it was better than sitting around after Omoikane's first ship was retired.

Right. When you have a partner like that, it's natural to follow them.

I was...well, 'raised' to pilot PTs myself. Not to interface with AIs specifically, just to pilot.

Its a shame programs like that exist on multiple worlds. And actually Omoikane wasn't originally considered for the Nadesico-B. I said I wouldn't come without him.
