Science Rules! The Science and Knowledge Expo Kicks into Full Force!

▼ Consider the Following......

Who: Anyone
Where: The entire city
When: June 8th-15th
Summary: Science and Knowledge Exop in the Leo Ward.
Warnings: That depends who is there. Remember to mark your titles clearly if any warnings need to be issued!

▼ You know what rules?

Science. Science and the inquiring mind has kept humanity on the path of progress for hundreds of thousands of years. What could make science rule harder?

A science showcase, of course! What better way spark the curiosity of the young and old by showing off the scientific achievements of the community. You have your things for the kids, your potato batteries and baking soda volcanoes and what-have-you, you have your higher-brow showcases of what the Department of Wands has been working on, your informative panels delving into biology, physics, chemistry and astronomy. There's even free food, including some molecular gastronomy creations for the...adventurous. There are even topics your average Visitor wouldn't think fell under the realms of science.

Such as? Why, like how Personas work (with explanations that aren't just "It's Magic") or discussions about demons, where they might come from, how they're different and similar to humans, how they use magic, and so on.

What kind of things will you and your friends discover? Perhaps you or someone you know is setting up an exhibit?

Regardless, enjoy the science fair and have fun!

[OOC: You are allowed to start a thread if you want your character to have a booth / hold a topic in a private room, or just do threads where you go around visiting. Projects and seminars are varied! Share your knowledge! Enjoy the science! Eat some really strange food! Try not to mix too much baking soda with vinegar!]

Kotoha's reply is blunt, if a tad distracted.

"Because it took something like half a dozen people working together for over a decade with full government funding to get the Storage System where it is now, and there's still a lot of issues with it."

Don't even get her started on the lack of documentation.

"And as far as I'm aware, nobody has figured out how to make it portable in any capacity yet."

... Hm.

"That depends on the kind of storage system you're talking about. I'll talk to you afterwards."

Kotoha nods cheerfully at this. She is...not good at waiting, but it is something she's capable of. She can certainly be patient while the rest of the attendees ask questions, especially since it helps her get a better handle on this entire subject.

Once he's done with his presentation, he lingers near the front of the room, packing up his things and allowing time for people to approach him with questions.

It doesn't take long for Kotoha to approach.

"Hi, I'm Kotoha. So, uh...the Storage System is a government-funded worldwide computer network designed to allow people - mostly trainers - to safely store excess pokemon in a secure place. Uh. Hold on a second..."

Kotoha rummages through her bag and draws out a red-and-white sphere.

"Okay, this one shouldn't stand out too much..."

With that, she presses the release button on the front of the sphere, which discharges a blaze of white light that resolves itself into a UFO-shaped robot.

"Okay, so the Storage System uses the same mass-to-energy-to-mass conversion system as Pokeballs, yeah? But instead of using it on the contents, it's used on the Pokeballs themselves, and apparently that's really hard. It took ages to figure out."
meaningdies: (burdens of thought and patience)

[personal profile] meaningdies 2013-06-19 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Tch... that's inefficient. Why would you go through that extra trouble? Unless they can't be changed from one of those to another one. That wouldn't make sense, either..."

What even. What is this world... though Magnezone does get another glance from him. It's not a demon, but it looks like it could be one.

"What, the Pokeballs? Yeah, once they've registered a Pokemon you can't swap them out - it's part of the general security feature, makes sure nobody can take your Pokemon without your consent."

With that, she sucks the Magnezone back into its Pokeball.

But what about Team Snagem though -

"That might be why they can't transfer them without the Pokeballs. I wonder - has anyone studied these creatures to see what their genetics are like?"

Because if you can transfer them anyway... why is it so hard to just encode them to a portable device?

Kotoha stops to think about that.

"...I don't think there's been a formal study as such, although it is known that all Pokemon have a common genetic ancestor, a pokemon known as Mew."
meaningdies: (you who would seek power)

[personal profile] meaningdies 2013-06-20 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hmm... well. If the pokeballs can be transferred with the creature inside, then it's just a matter of making a reliable wireless signal to be able to transfer them properly. If we're talking about swapping them inside the pokeballs, it's a matter of encoding their data to the correct file type. That's what I did with my program."

They're not Digimon, Naoya.

"Well, I think the main problem with making a portable client to access the main server is size, really. Trainers go all over the place, and anything portable enough to not be a massive burden simply can't run the Storage System program in the first place - a two-way transport machine is about the same size as a vending machine."

A pause to think.

"...there are teleport tiles, but that's fixed transference between two points, so they're mostly used as a security feature."
meaningdies: (ye not guilty)

[personal profile] meaningdies 2013-06-20 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Those things shrink... it shouldn't be that difficult to scale the machine sizes down. I suppose it depends where your world is in regards to computer technology... are laptops available? Like this one?"

Gesturing to his laptop, yep.

Nod.

"Yeah, we have those. Like I said, the main issue is the size of the transport machine - there's no reliable way to miniaturize one without losing the ability to change the destination on either end."
meaningdies: (patience grows thin)

[personal profile] meaningdies 2013-06-21 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
"That doesn't make sense, though. If you could hook it up to perhaps an arm-mounted device that could connect to a server, theoretically it should be possible, given what you've said so far."

Hmm...
