[Having only met Dagran once, Atsuro probably isn't qualified to judge whether or not his appearance is out of the ordinary. He himself has just finished some holiday shopping and exits one of the stores across the street with a bag in his hand.

The row of TVs draws him briefly, too. He pauses to take a look, and it isn't until he's turning away that he realizes who it was who had been next to him.]

Oh, hey! ...Enjoying the show?

Hm? [Almost as if roused from a deep sleep, the Shadow turns to stare blankly at Atsuro and shrugs; the stare continues for a good few seconds until it returns to the Christmas special.]

I suppose. It's better than a stick in the eye, isn't it?

...Do you think all families are really like that? Forever happy and ignorant? I wonder if anyone thinks that's true...

[All the same, he puts one hand on the glass and frowns as if the actors have personally offended him.]

...Uh.

[Atsuro's smile falters somewhat at this response before he gives a slight cough.]

N-No, well. ...I mean. I don't think anyone actually does.

[He turns to look back at the TV for a moment.]

But... even if we don't have something like that... it's nice to imagine it, isn't it?

No. [How so much venom can come out of one syllable is anyone's guess.] Dreams don't help anyone; why imagine this sort of thing when you can just replace your family?

[Not that he would if he could help it, but he can't exactly escape dead parent syndrome Shadow or no. But that's a whole other kettle of fish.]

You have to get things done and move on instead of wishing you had a family like that. It's stupid to think about how lonely you are when you can just surround yourself with people and fix it!
[Dagran clenches his fists for a few seconds; in this light it's a little hard to tell, but it looks like he's about to cry for some obscure reason.] It's not as if people are hard to fool.

A-Actually, it never made me feel much better, either, but that's the kind of advice I usually got, so....

[Atsuro coughs a little and tries to speak gently.]

...If you just ignore it, though, that doesn't solve any of your problems, either.

[At least Atsuro's being honest; such an admission makes the creature laugh, even as a tear sneaks down his cheek before he can will it away.]

Ha! That's good. Only wishy-washy people who don't know how it feels can say that so easily, right?

I'm not ignoring anything though. I'm moving on in life, see? My parents died so I get myself a new family who need me and who love me.

And then I kill the bastard who killed my family. It's easy.



Oh, but...[He leans in close, voice lowering to a dangerous whisper.] Don't tell anyone I said that. No one will like me if they find out I'm going to kill a knight, and if no one likes me, I'm on my own.

And I'll know who to come for.

[What to do about homicidal 10 year olds. Atsuro wasn't quite sure, and the surprise is evident in his face for a few moments before he gets ahold of himself.]

W-Wait... You can't do -- Well, actually, that sounds a little like justifiable homicide, but you still can't! You're like, ten. You... You have to have more to live for than that.
