Ichiban Market Golden Week Lottery!

Summary: The market is closed for Golden Week, but it's running a lottery promotion on the sidewalk.
Warnings: Gratuitous use of action brackets in a log post.

[The Ichiban Market from Nano's home world always closes every year so that its employees have more time to enjoy Golden Week and to restock the store, but there's also usually some sort of special sidewalk promotion designed to drum up more business when they reopen. Nikolai is the day to day manager, but Nano's stayed on as kind of a consultant since she's from the same world, and so she's spent the past week or so organizing a storefront lottery for the store to get rid of overstocked merchandise and stuff nobody ever buys anyway give away some fabulous prizes and appreciate their customers!

Nano herself is wearing an apron with the store's name on the front, a pair of cosplay cat ears from her other job, and is manning a Japanese style revolving lottery machine with multicolored marbles corresponding to each prize.  She's joined by store manager Nikolai, wearing his usual business attire, and also their newest employee - a ten year old girl by the name of Akane Awakusu.  She's decked out in a happi coat and a white headband, waving advertisement flyers and handing out promotional packs of tissues to anyone who lingers in front of the store for long enough to listen.  There is a sign set up next to the table they're all standing near announcing the lottery, with big bold text: GRAND PRIZE!  ONE NIGHT TRIP FOR TWO TO THE AMAGI INN!

Anyone is free to step up and try their luck!]

...Alright, then. It can't hurt to give it a try.

[Atsuro walks up to the wheel and gives it a cautious spin, whereupon he watches as it slowly comes to a stop on a certain number. Which is probably the worst number possibly for the RNG to pull up but thankfully Japanese culture probably isn't aware of any connotations concerning that number.]

Hm. How's my luck?

[Actually, it's just different colored marbles. A yellow one slowly plunks out after it's done spinning, which at the very least indicates Atsuro will go home with something better than a consolation prize of free tissues.]

Oh! You won something! Let's see...

[Nano checks a piece of paper she's got sitting by the machine briefly before heading over to dig something out of a box. When she comes back, she's holding one of these.]

Here you go! Congratulations!

[Reality suddenly shifts as the writer of these posts actually clicks on the image provided and modifies his mental sketchpad of the scene accordingly. Atsuro accepts his prize with a smile.]

Wow... I never win anything in this kind of thing! That's great; it's a... an extra-spherical spoon! ...For... dango!

[The hand of god describing the actions occurring in this lottery was not terribly clear to begin with, so that's fine too. Narrative structure has been repaired.]

Ah... actually, it's a melon baller. For... balling melons.

Oh. ...That makes a lot more sense.

[Atsuro accepts his prize gracefully.]

And it's almost summer, so it'll be good for watermelon.

....You know... Kabuso really enjoys watermelon. Maybe he should get to spin it once, too. And it wouldn't be fair to the other demons if they don't get to try, too, right?

[Atsuro glances towards Nano with a mischievous smile.]

[Oh, Atsuro. He may just be joking around for the most part, but Nano has a yet to be fully realized crush on him, so of course this sounds completely kosher to her.]

Of course! That's only fair, after all!

Ahaha... I'm just joking, Nano! We'd be playing seven times; you might run out of prizes.

[Atsuro grins and retreats from the wheel with his melon baller.]

Besides. I don't think I really want to know who Kabuso would want to take on a romantic evening getaway...

[Nano blinks for a moment as the joke sinks in, and then blushes sheepishly.]

Oh! Ahaha...! That's right - we need to make sure everyone gets a fair chance, after all.

[Atsuro will glance around for somewhere more comfortable to hold a conversation before he decides to seat himself on the steps leading up to the store. Maybe he would contribute to the feel of amiability of the store and attract more customers.]

...Do you actually run this store, Nano? It's not native to Hinoto-Ri, is it?

[all_wound_up]

[That's fine with Nano - she's happy to sit and talk to friends while she waits for more customers to come by. She takes a seat nearby, on the other side of the stairs.]

This store is from my hometown. They asked me to manage it, but I'm not very good with that kind of thing, so I offered the job to Nikolai-san instead since he was looking for one. The city still pays me a salary to come by and make sure everything is running smoothly every once in a while, though.

Hm.

[Nothing from his world has plopped down into Hinoto-Ri yet, as far as he's aware... Then again, there was nothing terribly interesting about his city except what was present in every Tokyo around the multiverse. ...With his luck, his school would appear complete with his homeroom teacher asking why he had been skipping for the last six months.]

Is that how it works? They ask you to take it over...

Do they have any idea at all why these buildings are appearing here?

That's how it worked for me, at least. I don't know what's causing it, though.

Maybe it would be for the best if we tried to find out. It might not be a good thing.

[Perhaps that was a strange thing to say. Atsuro glances over at Nano and gives a small shrug.]

I mean, it's great that people have things that remind them of home; don't get me wrong. But the implications are a little... scary.

I suppose it is pretty strange... but it's still nice to see familiar places.

Well...

I'm thinking more about what happens to the real landmarks while they're over here. It seems like they're just a copy, but... some of these places are so exactly detailed, it's hard to say.

...I mean, I know we can go back to the same point we left, but... buildings have things like... foundations and... usually people walking inside them, right?

I didn't even think of that.

[Nano blanches at the thought, glancing back nervously toward the market.]

A-Ah, don't worry about it! It's just... an idle thought.

[Atsuro gives a small shrug.]

I'm sure they'd take that kind of thing into consideration...

A-Anyway! Er. ...Do you have any plans for the rest of Golden Week, Nano?

...Yes!

[Oh good, a topic change. Thinking about the other thing was starting to get her worried.]

I'm excited for the cherry blossom festival. It sounds like a lot of fun!

Yeah. It will be a nice reminder of home.

[Atsuro will turn with a smile.]

I'm kind of glad this place is so much like Japan. ...Well, it is Japan, just... post-apocalypse. But it helps with the homesickness and all.

I know what you mean... I was so lonely and afraid when I first came here, but some parts of the city look so much like home that it feels really familiar somehow. And I'm sure everyone here misses their homes, too, so at least we can all understand each other that way. It brings us closer together.

[As does the fact that she's sort of unconsciously inching closer to him as she talks.]

[Atsuro doesn't seem to notice as he glances away from Nano and the shop out towards the bustling lights of the city.]

...Yeah.

It's a lot easier to get to know people when you're stuck in a weird situation together, huh? First with the lockdown... and here. ...Much longer here. We're all working together towards... something.

[Nano nods, giggling a little.]

I don't know what we're supposed to be working toward either, but I think as long as everyone works together, we'll be able to do it.

...Maybe for now, we should just work towards making friends.

[Atsuro turns back to Nano with a cheeky grin.]

Just like in an anime! ...But it would be a nice place to live if we could all just get along - Visitors, Anoli, whatever.

...Demons notwithstanding.

Even some of the demons are nice. I wonder if we really could all just be friends.

I think it's in most of their natures to want to try and... eat us. Or our souls. The nice ones, sure, why not?
