destinystrings | A Week in the Life of a Part Time Job Slave

Who: Yu, and yu, and yu, and especially yu. :D (yes, I'm punning; it's open to everyone)
Where: Virgo, Aquarius, and Taurus Districts; any given week.
Summary: The jobs Yu applied for called back... all of them. He chose two willingly, because how bad could they be? The third... well...

[Yu was always one to work hard if he wanted something. All those books he owns? Yeah, they didn't pay for themselves, you know. And right now he had extra motivation for working hard: Nanako was here, and he needed to look after her and her comfort -- after all, his uncle would probably hang him if he didn't.]

[So when all those jobs called him back at once? He had some things to think about. Accepting the job at Mays wasn't that hard to decide; it was the highest paying one in the long run, and if he was lucky there would be an employee discount. The second choice was a little harder, but ultimately a good idea; working in the kids section of the library would be an easy job, and he could always bring Nanako with him if she wanted to spend time with him. A win-win situation either way.]

[...and then he got that call. Again. He almost rejected it outright, but... well... he really wanted to make sure Nanako wanted for nothing...]

[S I G H; it was going to be his summer vacation all over again.]

[MONDAY-WEDNESDAY; MAYS GROCERY STORE CLERK, 5:00-11:00PM]
[This was probably the lesser of the evils Yu would ever have to do. He was slightly familiar with grocery store work, thanks to Yosuke asking for a favor at Junes every now and then. It wasn't really that bad at all, just... hectic, and some customers were flat out rude.]

[If you want to talk to him, Yu can be found servicing the grocery area; he's responsible for stocking shelves and promoting sale items as needed.]

[THURSDAY-FRIDAY; AQUARIUS DISTRICT LIBRARY, 5:00-9:00PM]
[Yu really did love kids, he really did. After all, when you had someone like Nanako as a cousin, it was hard not to love kids. The hard part was... remembering not all kids are as sweet and innocent as your baby cousin. Especially the little brat that thought it was a good idea to throw half chewed gum in his hair.]

[...he loves kids. He loves kids.]

[Yu can be found in the children's section of the library; he's responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the area, helping children find books, and making sure the books stay in the proper order.]

[SATURDAY; NYX'S NIGHTCLUB, 10:00PM-4:00AM]
[...your big brother loves you, Nanako. Just remember that.]

[It should go without saying that Yu really didn't want this job. The farther he stayed away from the Taurus district after that first mission, the better. But Nyx was pretty insistent, especially when she started throwing numbers at him. All he had to do was think of how quickly he would be able to get a comfortable apartment for himself and Nanako, and he ended up agreeing... with all the reluctance in the world.]

[He just hoped Nyx remembered her agreement of no pictures. He didn't need pictures of him popping up on the network, where he was pretty sure he'd be recognized, especially by those that had been there that night.]

[Yu can be found on stage, part of a crossdressing act that runs in cycles. When he's not on stage, he's in the dressing room resting and getting ready for the next cycle. Maybe if you're lucky, you'll also be able to catch him sneaking out of or into his apartment with a duffle bag of women's clothes.]

[ Kids these days really should wear braille name badges. It's only polite. ]

[Well, good, he could follow the sound of his footsteps. He still kept a slow pace, looking back every now and then to make sure he was still there.]

No, you're not. I was just organizing.

[It would be a mess in two minutes again anyway.]

That's a relief. You were the first person I happened across, you know.

[ That's the thing with libraries. Pretty much everyone tries their best to be quiet. It's as infectious as it is inconvenient. ]

You can call me Snake, Narukami. It's nice to meet you.

[...what kind of name was Snake? Maybe it was best he didn't ask...]

Nice to meet you as well.

[He paused, finally reaching an area that was marked in both English and Braille, indicating that books for the blind were there. Yu glanced back at Snake again, not sure what to do. Should he describe how big the area was...? That would probably help.]

The books are down this way. There are two walls of books; if you go down the aisle, they'll be on both sides of you. There are plates on the shelves letting you know what's there.

[ If Yu had asked, Snake wouldn't have thought twice about saying it's a code name. He'd even go the extra mile and explain where he got "Snake" from. ]

[ He walks down the aisle, trailing his right hand along the shelf and keeping his left arm by his side.

Since he didn't hear Yu walking away, Snake's certain he must still be waiting around. It'd be rude not to make conversation. ]

How does a young man such as yourself end up working in a library in the first place?

[No; Yu was reluctant to leave right away, in case he did need help. When Snake spoke, he began following a comfortable distance behind him.]

I don't mind working with kids, and they needed help in the children's section.

I see. So I found you in the children's section...

[ Something he says more for his own frame of reference. Now he knows there's no need for him to head in that direction again. ]

You must've thought it strange to see a grown man surrounded by children's books.

A little, until I realized why.

[Yu's understanding is at max; he's not going to question why beyond, "guy is obviously blind and didn't know".]

Perhaps I should feel a little embarrassed.

[ But he doesn't. He won't.

Snake stops in front of the shelf he'd been searching for. After taking a short while to inspect a few spines, he slides out a rather hefty looking book.

The cover alone screams Egyptian mythology. ]

How long have you been working here, Narukami?

[Yu tilted his head; he couldn't help but be curious. Was he an Egyptologist or something?]

Not long; I was just hired on.

[ In a wonderful display of multitasking, Snake skims through a couple pages of the book while keeping up an unrelated conversation with Yu. ]

Why the urge for employment? Can't you live comfortably in Hinoto-Ri without a job?

I have a little cousin to look out for.

[He paused a moment, glancing at the shelves.]

...she's like a sister to me. I want to make sure she doesn't want for anything.

[ He snaps the book shut and tucks it under his arm. ]

That I can understand, although my sister isn't in the city at the moment.

[ He pauses too. ]

I haven't quite decided if I feel relieved or lonely. Are you glad your cousin is here?

I'm... not sure. This place can be dangerous.

My friend from back home - he's here too - feels the same way. I suppose it's only natural to worry about family.

Of course. Especially when you're the elder sibling.

[ Especially when they're in a life-or-death situation. ]

By the way, both our sisters are legally adults. Those big brother instincts will never leave you, Narukami.
