It began entirely by accident, really.

Anant had learned that one celebrated the turning of the New Year - a novel experience, really! A world that didn't stand still, that had the cycle of night and day, and the turning of the seasons; the thought of beginning time anew was something beautiful and magnificent to the deluded god. No wonder humans would celebrate such an event!

Dionysus had suggested that perhaps wine would be the best thing to toast the New Year with - and, of course, it would be best to celebrate it where the moon was high in the sky and the stars in view. Atmosphere was just as important! Their quest took them to the square in the Scorpio Ward, nicely fixed up from a past event (something about scorpions, they didn't pry). Anant, of course, brought their own table.

Dionysus supplied the wine, Anant pushed it upon those who were passing by at the time, and soon a crowd began to gather. It started small, but Anant's bubbly personality, delicious wine, and the lighthearted atmosphere drew more and more Hinoto-Ri natives to the scene, and eventually, some of the new arrivals. By the time the clock struck midnight, on the New Years, a large impromptu party had taken over the square!

The free alcohol was possibly the cause of it, but so long as everyone was happy and having fun, why should Anant object to such a thing! To observe such a large congregation of people together - it was magical! Fantastical!

Devious.

It was just past half past twelve in the morning when the 'effect's began appearing. But what did one expect, accepting alcohol from the God of Lunacy? With the moon so high on the sky, washing down on the people below, on such a jovial occasion, how couldn't Dionysus splash a bit of mischief in there?

So have fun, my fellow inhabitants. This night will surely be memorable...

There was just a long, silent pause.

"A minor what? I do not understand what you mean."

"...You know. Underage? I'm under the drinking limit."

Although, did that really matter at this point? His parents were gone, and it wasn't like Anant knew what a drinking age was.

"There is an age limit?" That was news to him. "Well, oh, I suppose there are some non-alcoholic beverages close by..."

Anant sounded like Kaito just shot their puppy, the pout clear in their tone as they lowered the cup of wine, shuffling their feet sadly.

....Son of a bitch.

"Aha..." He reached over to take back the cup of wine that was offered to him in the first place. "One isn't gonna kill me."

Besides, he was always allowed a glass of wine on New Year's before this...

Anant immediately perked up, letting out a happy noise as they surrendered the cup of wine to Kaito. "Yes, yes! One drink at the very least won't hurt!"

Or so they say as they pick up another cup, as if preparing to foist that on Kaito as well.

Well...why not? It was one glass! What could possibly happen.

However, like someone who's encountered wine before, Kaito took a few sips instead of chucking it down the hatch. Huh...kind of good, actually!

Anant eagerly watched Kaito's reaction, tipping their own cup of wine forwards a little, a small trickle dripping onto the floor below. "Well? Do you like it? Do you wish for more?"

"Yeah, but let me finish this first." Even when Kaito said that, it wasn't stopping him from taking his sweet time in drinking it.

"Nice party." He said, suddenly more open and friendly to what Anant was doing.

"Yes, it is!" Anant said, not seeing anything strange in the change in demeanour. "It is full of nice people as well - do you wish for another cup?"

DUDE RELAX, he's got this!

"I will later, okay?"

Anant eased off, and moved to lift their mask up a fraction. They turned away from Kaito a little was the lower portion of their face was revealed enough to show their mouth, and took a swift gulp of wine before hastily lowering their mask again.

"Well! Shall we wander, then?"

[awww_yeeeeeaaaah]

"Mmn." He nodded and followed them with little to no issue, until he thought of something he's been wondering for awhile.

"How come you wear a mask?"

Anant's movements stuttered a little, but they swiftly resumed walking, turning the glass of wine between their hands as they walked, uncaring of the wine spilling over the rim and over their fingers.

"Because you are not allowed to see my face," they said, and for once they actually sounded somewhat sane.

[awww_yeeeeeaaaah]

"...Ah? I don't get it." Is Anant disfigured under there or something?

"It's not allowed to be seen," Anant said, and this time there was a sharpness to their voice. "It cannot be seen, because it shouldn't be seen. It is not a face that is - broken and corrupted, shattered and ripped, all gone and broken..."

They were turning the glass a bit more, their movements clearly agitated now. "Shame. Shame is why. Because. They. They would. Not. It is not. Allowed. To."

Whoa okay, this was getting a little out of hand! Despite how stilted Anant was sounding, Kaito still tried to give them a pat on the shoulder.

"Hey, it's alright. I'm sorry, maybe I shouldn't have asked..."

Anant breathed a bit heavily, but slowly eased up at the cautious pats on their shoulder. The moment of anxiety was brief, thankfully, and they smoothed their palm over their mask as if to assure themselves that it was still there.

"It is fine. It is simply - a failure of mine, a great, unforgivable failure, that is why I wear it. I cannot show my face while it clings to me."

"I...wouldn't say it's a failure..." But then, he still didn't totally get it.

"You're alright though, okay?"

"Yes, I am fine," Anant dropped their hand and turned away from Kaito, giving a small sniff. "Your concern for me, how touching... I am touched. Thank you. Yes, I am fine. Thank you."

"You're welcome. I'd hate to see you all sad..."

"Oh, there is no need to worry about that. I am never sad," Anant said, swiftly regaining their composure and turning back to Kaito. "Although such emotions are fascinating, they are not as frequent as good emotions. I suppose that is a blessing, yes?"

"...But. Uh. Weren't you just sad a second ago?"

What's going on?

"Was I?" Anant sounded puzzled. "I don't recall being sad. Perhaps you misunderstood me. Humans do that a lot."

"It happens," Anant said carelessly, "But oh, I have derailed our conversation quite a bit! What were we discussing beforehand? I am sorry, I do tend to ramble and upset the flow, haha."
