It began entirely by accident, really.

Anant had learned that one celebrated the turning of the New Year - a novel experience, really! A world that didn't stand still, that had the cycle of night and day, and the turning of the seasons; the thought of beginning time anew was something beautiful and magnificent to the deluded god. No wonder humans would celebrate such an event!

Dionysus had suggested that perhaps wine would be the best thing to toast the New Year with - and, of course, it would be best to celebrate it where the moon was high in the sky and the stars in view. Atmosphere was just as important! Their quest took them to the square in the Scorpio Ward, nicely fixed up from a past event (something about scorpions, they didn't pry). Anant, of course, brought their own table.

Dionysus supplied the wine, Anant pushed it upon those who were passing by at the time, and soon a crowd began to gather. It started small, but Anant's bubbly personality, delicious wine, and the lighthearted atmosphere drew more and more Hinoto-Ri natives to the scene, and eventually, some of the new arrivals. By the time the clock struck midnight, on the New Years, a large impromptu party had taken over the square!

The free alcohol was possibly the cause of it, but so long as everyone was happy and having fun, why should Anant object to such a thing! To observe such a large congregation of people together - it was magical! Fantastical!

Devious.

It was just past half past twelve in the morning when the 'effect's began appearing. But what did one expect, accepting alcohol from the God of Lunacy? With the moon so high on the sky, washing down on the people below, on such a jovial occasion, how couldn't Dionysus splash a bit of mischief in there?

So have fun, my fellow inhabitants. This night will surely be memorable...

"Wh- no!"

Okay, Yamato said that with a bit too much defensiveness in his tone. He swallowed and tried to adopt a flat expression, a bit embarrassed with himself. Ah, he should leave. Talking to Kaito with his emotions not under his complete control was going to end in disaster.

Instead he stayed, against his better judgement.

"I was...cold weather does not agree with me," he muttered.

"Pffft whatever. It's okay, at least you're out again! And socializing...kind of."

Kaito will take what he can get, and he leaned against the table, stretching himself out and making himself comfortable.

"It's only for a brief time," Yamato said, sounding thoroughly disgruntled. His cheeks were a faint shade of red, and he fiddled with the cup in his hands, unable to control his nervous twitches.

"...I would have thought you'd be angry with me."

...Confused staring.

"...Foorrrrr?" Did...did he forget those drunk anon posts or something?

"...never mind. I must've been confused with something," Yamato said, deciding not to remind Kaito of his little, erm, episode over the network. That would be one less thing to deal with.

"In - any case. I'm, not entirely sure how to proceed with this. As in, considering that we left on terms that made our relationship currently ambiguous..."

Ah, he was rambling. He was rambling like a nervous idiot. Yamato stopped himself by sipping the wine, feigning coolness and failing miserably.

"Pffft. You overthink everything, don't you?" Kaito, this wasn't the time to laugh...

"I- I do not!" Yamato blustered. "I'm well aware of the nuances that relationships carry, especially regarding feelings that are, well, unrequited..."

Yamato's voice trailed off into a low grumble when he realised that Kaito was probably just teasing him. He was making light of something that Yamato found genuinely upsetting! He fixed Kaito with a narrowed look, giving a quiet, unimpressed sniff.

"To use Kaito would suggest a close relationship. As you rejected me, then, some levels of formalities are necessary to establish the more distant type of relationship...correct?"

[awww_yeeeeeaaaah]

"Dude, just call me Kaito. If you don't, it sounds like I'm gonna get lectured by my history teacher or something."

Okay?

Was that a good enough explanation?

"But..."

Yamato looked like he was going to protest, but after a moment of thought, allowed the subject to drop with a troubled expression of confusion. This was just confusing, and with his keen mind dulled by the alcohol, he couldn't make sense of it. Just go with him.

Besides, he still got a selfish sort of pleasure in using Kaito's first name.

"Very well, ah, Kaito."

"That's better." He nodded and watched Yamato continue to fiddle with the cup.

"How many have you had?"

"I'm...not entirely certain," Yamato admitted, giving a slight start at the question. "I, well, possibly, um, perhaps about six."

[awww_yeeeeeaaaah]

"...Wh-" Wow that is not okay.

"That's way too much! No wonder you've been getting drunk." First the thing that Daichi told him about, and there was probably...another thing, but for some reason, that was a little fuzzy to recall...

"It isn't that much," Yamato protested, his pride rising to the challenge. "I drank far more when I was with Shura a few months ago."

Granted, he couldn't remember that night in the slightest, only that he woke up in Daichi's apartment and very nearly vomited all over the poor brunet when the hungover hit. He was certain he didn't get up to much mischief though.

Although a repeat of the hangover wasn't looking all that appealing.

"Yes it is! It totally is. Look at you." He pointed to Yamato's stomach, most likely trying to point out how thin and waif-like he was.

"A breeze could probably tip you over. You're plowed."

"I am not going to stand here and be insulted," Yamato sniffed, setting the glass aside on the table pointedly, and then turning on his heel - or rather, he tried to. He ended up tripping over himself, and grabbed onto the edge of the table to stop himself from tumbling to the floor in a graceless sprawl.

"..."

He straightened up, clearing his throat a little. "That - was...intentional."

Okay, that was admittedly really funny, but still.

"I'm not...pffftahahaha! I'm not insulting you, dude."

"You're laughing at me..."

Yamato was beginning to sound sulky now, turning back around to give Kaito a petulant look.

"I'm laughing that you tripped. See what I mean by overthinking things?"

Yamato let out a disgruntled huffing noise, his eyes narrowing before he allowed the explanation to pass. "Still, I highly doubt a breeze would knock me over. I'm not, uh, blowed."

Plowed, Yamao.

"Plowed. Wasted. Stumbling down drunk. Sauced."

He let this all sink in before smirking.

"Words that describe Yamato Hotsuin."

"...what strange synonyms you have for 'drunk'..." Yamato muttered beneath his breath before his brain caught up. "Wa- I said I'm not! I merely had difficulty with my balance! That can be brought on by a myriad of things!"

HUFF HUFF HOTSUNDERE POUT.

"Yeah!" He paused, as if he were setting up for the punchline.

"Like drinking, for instance."

Yamato looked like he was ready to headbutt Kaito, or at the very least, smack him. "...this argument will have no end," he finally said, his tone raising a bit. "So we will end it here on the agreement to agree to disagree."

It's not..." UUUUGH, why was Yamato so cute!?

"I'm just saying, you're gonna get sick if you keep it up."

"There's no need to be concerned about my health," Yamato said simply, turning his face away with a small huff, the alcohol giving his cheeks a faint pink hue, his lips almost set into a...pout? "I will be fine, I assure you."
