WINE PARTY EVENT

Summary: Anant and his Persona Dionysus throw a wine party! Mingle, have fun, and watch out for the drinks, some of them are spiked...
Warnings: Alcohol, so expect some silliness in this log. All of the silliness.

It began entirely by accident, really.

Anant had learned that one celebrated the turning of the New Year - a novel experience, really! A world that didn't stand still, that had the cycle of night and day, and the turning of the seasons; the thought of beginning time anew was something beautiful and magnificent to the deluded god. No wonder humans would celebrate such an event!

Dionysus had suggested that perhaps wine would be the best thing to toast the New Year with - and, of course, it would be best to celebrate it where the moon was high in the sky and the stars in view. Atmosphere was just as important! Their quest took them to the square in the Scorpio Ward, nicely fixed up from a past event (something about scorpions, they didn't pry). Anant, of course, brought their own table.

Dionysus supplied the wine, Anant pushed it upon those who were passing by at the time, and soon a crowd began to gather. It started small, but Anant's bubbly personality, delicious wine, and the lighthearted atmosphere drew more and more Hinoto-Ri natives to the scene, and eventually, some of the new arrivals. By the time the clock struck midnight, on the New Years, a large impromptu party had taken over the square!

The free alcohol was possibly the cause of it, but so long as everyone was happy and having fun, why should Anant object to such a thing! To observe such a large congregation of people together - it was magical! Fantastical!

Devious.

It was just past half past twelve in the morning when the 'effect's began appearing. But what did one expect, accepting alcohol from the God of Lunacy? With the moon so high on the sky, washing down on the people below, on such a jovial occasion, how couldn't Dionysus splash a bit of mischief in there?

So have fun, my fellow inhabitants. This night will surely be memorable...

"Also death. We're from different worlds." It had seemed strange at first, but she'd had two years to get used to the idea. "Some people prefer to call me Didi."

"Oh. And I don't suppose he would be from Nosgoth either? ...Where is it you're from?"

Absently, he peeked back down to his sketchbook, and ran a nail from the binding on the top, into the book itself, finding a new blank page that way, smoothing the paper out with his fingers.

"He's from the Discworld. The universe I'm responsible for doesn't have a specific name." Just a big old the. Which was a bit of a misnomer, since apparently it wasn't actually allowed the definite article.

He paused again at that, smile turning to a more confused look after a second. "But if you have responsibilities to your... universe... and you're here... I assume you mean you're responsible for death happening there? ....so what happens while you're absent?"

This was a concern here, really. At least he wasn't apparently afraid she'd be causing more deaths here?

She grimaces. "Nothing good. But, fortunately, I can be more than one place at a time. And enough happened in Mayfield to make me sure that the... rest of me is still hard at work."

"Ah." A little nod. "...and... Mayfield is?"

A slight pause-- "I'm sorry, I don't mean to pry so much. There's just... so much that's new here to me, and...." Have an apologetic shrug and a bit of a sheepish smile.

"It's fine. I'm used to answering a lot of questions." Major function, really. "Mayfield was another strange place that brought people from other worlds. It's where we met."

"I see." He wondered, for a moment, just how many worlds there were... and then pushed that thought aside. He had no way of guessing in the first place, and it wasn't something he needed to hurt his head trying to figure out.

"Well..." he looked back up to her again, eyes having wandered back down to the page before him for just a moment while he thought. It wasn't that he didn't have anything to ask death herself, or whatever part of death she was... it was that nothing came to mind. Plus, he'd already been asking her things, and it was starting to feel a bit one-sided, which he wasn't entirely comfortable with; he'd never liked feeling like a bother to others in the least, even if it was only in his own mind.

So instead, "is there anything you'd like to ask me?"

"I'd actually like to hear a bit more about your people. What you value, what your great arts are, that sort of thing." Death was at her core a people person. And here was a whole culture she didn't know.

"Um... well... my clan lives in the Citadel, with the humans. And our ranks are taken from the top of theirs, the best of their hunters that agree to join us." He made a slight face. "I'm not involved in picking those out, though. That's up to the others. I don't really have anything much to do with going out hunting for the other clans. I mean-- I'm an architect."

He paused. Maybe if she asked him something more specific, he'd know better what to say in answer to her?

"Oh, you're an architect?" Now that was nice and specific. She could work with that. "What sort of things do you design?" Architecture wasn't really part of her sphere, but people were and she would always be interested.

"Whatever is needed, I suppose. Our castle, the library, most of the buildings that were added since the humans started allowing us to rebuild our clan...." He shrugged a little. "I've done most of the stained glass, and the displays in the clans' wing of the library."

In other words, she might've even seen some of it while she was looking through the sketchbook. Or, really, seen a fair number of examples, and not realized it.

"So those buildings you were drawing?" This did explain why he was so adept at drawing. NOt that it had needed explaining, of course.

"A lot of them, yes." He's had long enough a time to practice, is the better explanation. Blueprints and observational drawing often required somewhat different skill sets.

"I could've done better on some of them, but..." A little shrug, looking back down to the blank page in the book, cheeks edging a bit toward purple. Absently, he started sketching something again, with light little pencil-strokes....

"Well, life is always about getting better. If everyone started out as good as they were ever going to get it would be boring." And she was, honestly, quite impressed either way.

"I suppose so."

Sketch, sketch-- "I just wish I'd paid a lot more attention to my mentor. It was forever ago, but... if I'd known how much we could've benefitted from what he'd had to teach me...."

A small sigh, but he doesn't let his bit of a smile drop; his (metaphorical) mask holds, at least for the moment. "Live and learn, as they say. But... it turned out well enough."

He looked back up to her, still sketching. "Did you have to learn more about how to do what you do? Er... I mean, the rest of you, or... however that works out?"

"Not at the whole being Death thing, but I used to be really bad at dealing with people." It was actually a bit of an understatement. The words used to fully capture that just weren't used in polite company.

"The only person older than me is Destiny. He gets duty, but he doesn't really get people, so I had to figure a lot on my own."

"I... haven't been very good at being social either. I never have, especially within my own clan." He sort of shrugged, smiling a little more, self-consciously. "It isn't so bad when I'm speaking with our humans, I suppose. Or at least, I find it somewhat easier." A little pause. "Except then, it seems they find it less so."

His smile changed a little, seeming a more honest one, at what'd crossed his mind next. "However, I don't have to deal here with what station I have in my clan. I'm just some strange person with wings, and... it's different. And I think I vastly prefer it." Go back home? Nah, not yet. He's busy enjoying being in Hinoto-Ri, as odd a place as it may be.

"Sometimes it's a lot easier to just be away from any expectations. It gives you a new perspective on things. That's actually what let me get better at it." And it only took millions of years to figure it out!

"Getting a chance to start out again, where no one knew you already?"

Sketch, sketch....

If she wanted to peek at what he was working on, she might be able to recognize it as a picture of herself, at this point.

"If only that'd been possible for me, before now." He smiled a little more again, shaking his head... oh well, he was taking his chance to be here and keeping it. "Where was it you went, when you did?"

"I started spending a day out of every century mortal. Just... picked a planet.

She glances down at the sketchbook. That's a bit unexpected. "Oh... wow."

"Only a day each century?" He paused in sketching, peeking back up at her with a touch of surprise. "But... how many days-- I mean, if they were consecutive, then you'd-- er...." He had no idea how to phrase what he was trying to figure out how to ask, clearly.

She's pretty sure she knows where this is going. People do seem to get hung up on the numbers. "Even just counting the mortal time, I'm a few hundred years old, yes."

"But those were only single days, spread out that far apart? How did you... get into things? Wouldn't it have been easier if you'd just--"

Pausing now, something she'd said catching up with him. He blinked, straightening up a little, looking right at her again, not sure what to make of this. His wings sunk an inch, absently. "Wait... if you've only spent a few centuries in this form... then I'm... older than this form of you is....?"

"Well, the universe would cheat a bit. But the point was to find out what it's like to be alive and die. And then to never forget." A simple concept, really. It had just taken a ridiculous amount of time to figure it out. "Overall, I'm ten billion. Ish."
