Starting this week, the apartments also now have TELEPORTERS! These allow you to go from one apartment facility to the other.

They can be found in LEVEL 4 and are big enough to accommodate everyone (but maximum 5 at a time). However, due to the fact that they are still in the testing phase, you may find yourself appearing in the wrong part of the 4th level in the other building -- and that does include above the swimming pool. Hope you like water! (Thankfully this doesn't happen most of the time...most of the time.)

Start your thread with your character's name and their room number. You can always add what they might be doing, or just leave it open for other people to come in. Others then reply to them with the date that they come in and let the CR begin. Fun times are had by all!]

[Shinjiro certainly wouldn't blame Minato for feeling that way. Not after what Minako told him. He knows about the promise, and the school's rooftop, and what happens there. Shinjiro knows that's where Minako will die, and can only assume that the twins endings are the same. And knowing that, rooftops have become something else for him, too.

But for as painful as that future inevitability is, Shinjiro has other memories to live on that revolve around rooftops. Skipping class, Aki coming and waking him up. Some of his better days, really. It also helps that the apartment's rooftop here is also quiet. It isn't frequented by many people, and for the most part, when Shinjiro finds his way up here, he's always by himself. Him and his little radio that he's shoved in a corner. It's not on right now, but it's there. For the moment, Shinjiro's not doing much, eyes scanning the city from his vantage point, his face wearing the same stoic expression it always has.

The fourth is over, and he's pretty damn grateful for it. Can't say he's slept much, but he has enough coffee in his system to keep him going for awhile.

He spots Minato not long after he arrives, turning his head, staring at the new arrival for a few seconds.]

"Didn't think I'd see you up here."

[He can stay if he wants.]

[ Minato meets his stare in silence before shrugging. ]

It seemed like a good place to wait.

[ And once he's said that, he figures since Shinjiro's look didn't scream 'go away and leave me alone', it's okay if he shuffles over to join his senpai at the rail. He pulls his hands out of his pockets only so he can rest his elbows on said rail as he, too, looks out over the city.

He's quiet for some time before a single thought worms its way out his mouth. ]

... it seems so much less chaotic from up here.

[He nods once, followed by a quiet grunt of agreement. Being up here always seemed to put things in perspective. Hard to think when you were surrounded by sound and people and chaos... and everything life was more than what it wasn't. And if he had learned anything, life was rarely quiet.]

Most places that are quiet do.

[And are difficult to find.]

You wear those earphones all the time. Guess you can create your own damn noise, can't you? [Or "choose" the noise, anyway. But he'll be damned if he hasn't seen Minato without his earphones, regardless of whether he was listening to a damn thing or not.] Ain't that the point of those things?

[ He chuckles a little. ]

I guess so. ... tunes out the other noise, though... unwanted thoughts, too.

[ Everyone has those at some point, right? Minato's sure Shinjiro knows what he means. ]

[ An eyebrow arches at that, fixes him with one of those brief, side-long glances. He knows. Perhaps better than most people their age. If only he could tune out the worst of them. And he's sure Minato has plenty of things he'd rather not think about. So his sister deflects and distracts herself with other things, while he mutes things out with music.

He shakes his head.]

Tch. Guess you're one of those idiots that think too much, huh?

[ Of course, he's one of them too. Music just isn't his measure of choice, however. Better memories are. They're his noise, the river he tries to drown everything else in. Take a stubborn thought or memory or two, throw them in, weighted down, watch each one slowly suffocate beneath the surface until they die for a little while. ]

[ He might be teasing a little, as he looks side-long right back at Shinjiro. But from what he's learned about Shinjiro, they seem pretty similar in some ways. Different flavors of the same sort of memory avoidance and quiet presence. ]

[ Or is it just brief quiet moments like this? ]

[ He stares back at Minato for a moment, appraisingly. So Minato wasn't so quiet and non-confrontational that he couldn't manage to hold his own and return with a comeback or two.

At his question, though, he pauses, his hands digging their way deeper into his coat pockets. The truth of it is that he doesn't know. Not really. He's listened to music, sure, in passing. On television commercials, in movies, on the streets, the dissonant sounds that come from the seedy clubs that come to life when the night does. He can appreciate what music is and hear the internal rhythm that guides it, and then find some sort of satisfaction in what he hears, but he's never sat down and gone through anything, really listened to music for what it was, sorting what he likes from what he dislikes. He's never owned a CD. Followed an artist. Gone to a concert. ]

Most of the random stuff I hear 's fine.

[ He's never had the opportunity, really. When the orphanage you were raised in couldn't even afford a small Christmas for the children they were trying to raise, CD players and shit like that were out of the question. He remembers that there was a small, cheap stereo, but there were a lot of children, and most of his extra time was spent outside with Aki. You could never keep Aki inside for too long. And even after the fire, there was never much time for music. You didn't become stronger by listening to the latest pop hit.

And even after the orphanage, his time there had taught him to live without seemingly unnecessary things. Owning things like that seemed... well, almost frivolous when you had lived on nothing for so long. The money you did have was better spent on other things. He didn't need much. He guesses he has a radio now—an old, beat up thing he found—but he hasn't taken the time to listen to a lot. He might be able to say something generic, but that wasn't the same. ]

I don't listen to music much. Probably wouldn't know what the hell to do with one of those fancy music players if I ever got one.

[ If Shinjiro hadn't called him an idiot, he might not have retorted quite like that, but well... it had seemed the right response.

In any event, he can guess at reasons why Shinjiro doesn't listen to music and brushes the whole thing aside with his comment on 'fancy music players.' He wants to laugh a little, though, at the description, as he considers his own very much... not fancy. He's seen other newer models with full color screens and a lot more memory, but he likes his. It's simple. Easy. And he can hang it comfortably around his neck. It's easier than a CD player, too, and he doesn't worry about the disk skipping because of a scratch. But it is fancier than a radio and certainly fancier than nothing at all.

He wonders, absently, if maybe he ought to get some music for Shinjiro. Consult with Minako about what she thinks he'd like and then get him some and take him to pick out a pair of headphones he likes and then say, 'Try it. Just for a little while. If you don't like it, fine. But try it first.' He wonders if it might help. If Shinjiro might like it. Or if he'd only do it to humor them and be nice and then never listen again.

So he nods and is quiet for a while, dwelling on his thoughts before he opens his mouth again. ]

[ Listen to music, he means. He's toying with his mp3 player almost without seeming to realize it. But he's watching Shinjiro, studying him so as to gauge more of his feelings on music. And life. And sound and quiet. Everything the're talking about, whether directly or at angles. ]

[ He's not complaining, and miles away from being offended. He hasn't really acquainted the Arisato name with being a doormat. Still holds true, apparently.]

Listen to music?

[ He shrugs. He certainly doesn't dislike music. He's not sure he could walk around with earphones clipped around his ears 24/7, because being alert to the world around you was important, but— ]

So long as it isn't any of that screaming metal shit.

Hm.

[ He's pretty sure he doesn't have any of that 'shit' loaded onto his player, so there's no risk of that, but he still looks down at it, skipping through tracks until he finds the one he's looking for. But he hesitates about handing his headphones over to Shinjiro. He trusts Shinjiro to be careful with them, but it's just... he's not sure if it's clear what that trust means.

Even if they're talking about music and quietness, Minato's still been in the process of assessing Shinjiro. He hasn't missed the signs of his sister's attraction to Shinjiro or the mutual nature of that attraction, subtle as they have been. Extending his trust as far as something as important as music goes is in some ways like saying he trusts Shinjiro with other important things, like his sister. Not that his sister and his headphones are remotely on the same level, of course, but it's... a parallel.

And he wants Shinjiro to know that, even if he's not going to outright say it.

So after that moment, he unloops his headphones from around his neck and holds them out. ]

... you might like this track. It's... soothing.

[ It's not rap or metal or anything with voices, actually. It's a melancholy orchestral piece by an English composer based on an older hymn. It's rather different from what Minato usually listens to on a day-to-day basis, but rap and jpop are only a part of his musical interests. His interest in the violin and participation in school orchestras has also exposed him to a wide range of more classical pieces. And sometimes, during those rare times when he can't sleep or simply wants to lose himself in a melody with no distracting words, things like this are perfect. ]

[ He may not grasp the full meaning behind Minato's actions, not yet—he'll understand more in a few days, once Minato takes an unexpected trip into the pool—but he can sense some of it. He can read between the lines, eyes scratching the surface of the normally invisible. He's never seen Minato around without his mp3 player within the reach of his hands, with his headphones looped around his neck or ears. He had figured it was important, somehow, even if this assumption is only based on his own way of living, in that you keep what's most important to you close, like Shinjiro does his pocketwatch.

So he'll treat Minato's headphones with care, just like he would with his sister, even though both are far more durable than some people would (perhaps) give credit for. Shinjiro's movements are rough and unrefined, he wasn't designed for elegance, but he knows how to be careful.

He loops the headphones around his ears, listening to the music work its way through the speakers, a bit surprised at the choice. He hadn't expected something instrumental. Not that he knows whether it's something classical, or a track from some movie, but... he doesn't mind it. He could listen to this in the background, even though he might be too embarrassed to do it in public. The song doesn't demand attention so much as it encourages contemplation. ]

It's fine.

[ Which is as close as he can get to saying he likes it on some level—or at the very least, that it isn't something he dislikes. ]
